in honor of valentine’s day, i asked some of my favorite couples to share the secrets of their partnership. both individuals are in a creative field (sometimes the same field!), and find ways to inspire, collaborate and support one another while remaining dedicated to their own endeavors. there is no competition, jealousy or doubt but love and respect. let’s read about these POWER COUPLES, shall we?

do you keep a notebook or a diary? i still have mine from high school. but lately, i have become very dependent on evernote. i throw everything into it and i like using it for free-writing. i have this dream of having song ideas and writing concepts tagged with certain moods or characters so they can be easily searchable. has that happened yet? nope. it sounded good in my head.
i think writing things down helps you remember things, but also who you are in the moment of your remembering. it’s not always the most factual re-telling but you collect bits and pieces from reality to build your story – whether it is for fiction or for your own memories. i have some memories where i have added props, characters, and lines that are maybe true. you know… maybe we didn’t eat catfish on 4th of july in 1993 but that’s how i remember it – a kind of harmless fiction. they help me remember how i felt, how i saw it all.
but joan didion really says it best. read the whole essay. i heard about it on brain pickings.
this blog is my creative catch-all. just like an athlete goes to the gym everyday, this blog is my attempt at a consistent creative workout. in order to write my best songs, i have to be processing ideas and thinking out loud – that’s just how my brain works. i love art and its power to explore your emotions and take you to a place you never imagined. i love art that startles you with beauty and reveals it in the strangest places. that’s the art i’m trying to make and i really gotta work at it if i’m going to get there.
this has been a year of inspiration, discipline and courage for me. thank you to my readers – i hope you find something here that can inspire and challenge you. in 2013, this blog will become more about writing, workflow, ideas, advice and new music! don’t get me wrong, i’m still going to post gift guides and the occasional style update, but the conversation will shift a little. hope you’ll chime in. if you ever have any suggestions, ideas, comments, please email me and let me know what you’d like to see here. i would love to hear from you.
