FILL THE WELL with DAMIEN JURADO

In this series, I ask other songwriters about their quest for inspiration and how they tackle the day-to-day tasks of writing quality, engaging songs. Behind every good song is a hard-worker. I want to know how songwriters work and how they fill their well so it never goes dry.

I am absolutely thrilled to host DAMIEN JURADO for this week’s Fill the Well. Damien’s music crafts a world and tries to make sense of it. His lyrics patiently wait in a moment, cataloguing the details and tension of everyday life across a range of genres and styles. His answers, like his lyrics, are expressive but succinct.

1. What is your typical work day?

It varies… I have been keeping good with actually practicing. I didn’t for years. I figured it was time. Actual “work” for me is many different things. Being a musician is a small part of it.

2. What tools do you use to keep you organized and productive? (Do you have a favorite notebook/pen? Favorite computer program for to-do lists or home recording? A lucky instrument?)

Mostly my IPhone. I take a lot of audio notes.

3. Do you have any habits, exercises or activities that jumpstart your creativity?

Just sitting down and playing, just for the sake of playing. Again, it’s new for me.

4. Are there any specific (or favorite) books, films, lectures, etc. that continue to inspire you?

There is a lot. Mostly movies that I have seen in the past. Some books… poetry. My belief in God also plays a role.

5. Where do you get ideas for songs? How do you catalog them?

The songs just sort of appear, and overall I am entertaining them and filtering.

6. How do you combat writer’s block?

It’s not something that i have ever struggled with. That is not bragging. I am very blessed.

7. Who is your songwriting hero?

Allen Ginsberg

8. Do you have any advice to offer a new songwriter?

Keep it simple. Let the song lead you.

My jaw dropped when I opened this email. A HUGE thank you to Damien for appearing on my little blog. A boyfriend put “Abilene” on a mixtape for me, then I found Where Shall You Take Me? and spent hours listening to his records with the CD jacket in hand, studying his lyrics. If you haven’t heard Maraqopa (released last year), get out from under your rock – it is stunning.
